Smart Lecture Capture and AV-over-IP Upgrade at St Michael’s Grammar School

At St Michael’s Grammar School, the central atrium serves as a flexible space for lectures, assemblies, and parent events. To modernise the environment and introduce professional-grade recording, the school partnered with D.I.B Audio Visual to deliver a robust AV upgrade focused on high-quality capture and simple operation.

A key component is the Lumens VC-A50PN PTZ camera with NDI, mounted on a custom bracket to achieve optimal height and coverage across the stepped seating. Preset recall and remote pan, tilt, and zoom control allow staff to frame presenters quickly and reliably, without requiring technical expertise.

Video is transported via extended-range HDBaseT for dependable long-distance signal distribution within the building, while NDI enables flexible AV-over-IP workflows. This allows camera feeds to be shared across the campus network, including adjacent facilities and buildings across the road, using the school’s existing infrastructure.

The Lumens VC-A50PN PTZ camera is custom mounted to maximise coverage while remaining unobtrusive. Linked with Magewell NDI decoders, the school can also broadcast events from the Atrium to other spaces across campus.
Recording presets on the custom GUI interface for the Atrium make the most of the camera and display, allowing the school to record or stream depending on their needs

At the core of the system is the Lumens LC200 Lecture Capture System, consolidating switching, recording and streaming into a single platform. Multiple inputs — including the PTZ camera and presentation sources — are captured simultaneously and managed through a custom-built graphical user interface. Staff can preview layouts on the large touchscreen, select picture-in-picture or full-screen formats, and start or stop recordings with confidence.

The live preview reflects the final output, reducing operator error and eliminating the need for post-production editing. Completed files are automatically saved to the school network for easy distribution.

Laptops and other HDMI sources are easily brought into the network workflow using the Magewell Pro Convert HDMI Plus, while still providing a local feed for live display. Through the NDI integration, the camera feeds from the campus’ award-winning St George’s Theatre can be routed to the Atrium’s large LED wall, while Atrium content can also be shared with the nearby cafeteria and other spaces across campus. Recording capability is shared between the Atrium and cafeteria, allowing events in either location to be captured or displayed.

The result is a reliable, scalable capture environment that supports daily teaching and whole-school events — integrated by D.I.B Audio Visual.
