Magewell Director Plus runs a solo rocket launch broadcast

Órbita Infinita

Liftoff lasts about thirty seconds, but the broadcast around it runs for hours. In this Magewell customer story from Florida, one presenter covers the whole thing on his own with a single Director Plus.

The challenge

Pablo Fuente runs Órbita Infinita, a Spanish-language spaceflight channel broadcasting from Kennedy Space Center. His show had grown to three cameras and a laptop, and the press-site network is shared by a few hundred journalists at the worst possible moment. Every source had to be cabled, with no crew to fall back on and no room for dead air.

One box, the whole control room

Director Plus takes all four sources over HDMI, streams to YouTube, and records locally at the same time. Ethernet and cellular run together as backup, and hot-swappable batteries keep it on air through long coverage windows.

It is a full control room in the space a laptop used to take, which is what lets one person cover a rocket launch properly. Pablo Fuente, Órbita Infinita

He builds his scenes the night before, so on launch day he’s switching, not building. For an independent channel, that’s the difference between covering a launch and not covering it.
